Hire your first freelancer

Hire your first freelancer: when is it time?

Do you want to be more productive, enjoy your work more, make more money and have a bigger impact on the world?

Believe it or not, hiring a freelancer can do all that (and more!) for you!

When you’re an entrepreneur, there are several milestones in your journey that you celebrate...

Your first client, your first sale, your first amazing testimonial… and hiring your first freelancer!

If hiring your first freelancer scares you, don’t worry, that’s totally normal!  As entrepreneurs, we tend to like to be in control. When we hand over that control, no matter how small the task might be, it’s like handing over our babies.

Letting someone else take control of a piece of your business can be super nerve-wracking!

But it’s the best thing you will ever do.

It’s the best thing you CAN do for your business.

And, like everything, there’s a probably going to be some test runs, some ups and downs and the very first person you hire might not be the perfect fit for your business.

So how do you know when you should hire your first freelancer?  And who should you hire first?

The easy answer is to hire someone as soon as possible.  Right from day 1 if you can!

Think about the types of tasks you do on a daily basis:

  • Are they repetitive?
  • Do you enjoy them?
  • Are they ACTIVELY earning you money?
  • Could someone else do it better or quicker?
  • Do you need to learn a new skill set to complete them?
  • Do they need YOU to do them or SOMEONE to do them?

Because another thing that business owners like to do is do everything themselves.  And then they get overwhelmed with the number of things they have to get done.

And then things start to slip.

Orders go wrong or don’t get sent out on time...

Meetings & appointments get missed or you get double booked...

Your suppliers get annoyed with late payments...

You don’t have time to market your business so your pool of leads dries up and your calendar starts to look empty...

And all the time you’re sitting in front of your computer with a to-do list as long as your arm, desperately trying to keep up with everything!

Plus of course, you have to keep learning and expanding your own skills so you can provide the very best service for your clients and customers.

And this is why so many online businesses fail.

Because you, the entrepreneur, are The Creator.  You’re the person who wants to get your product or service out to the world and help people.

You want to DO the thing you love.

And you don’t want to do taxes (who really does?!)

You want to focus on your clients and building your relationships with your audience.

And that’s what you should be doing!

But that means you need someone to do those other things in your business.

Like answering emails, scheduling appointments, proof-reading & formatting blog posts, scheduling social media posts, researching data, keeping the books up to date, ordering stock or the million and one other things that need doing every day in order to run a successful and profitable business.

That person, that’s your freelancer.

It may be one person, it may be that you hire a few freelancers all focusing on their own area of expertise.

Because not only can you not do everything at once, you’re probably not an expert in everything.  And that’s totally OK!

I know in my coaching business, I focus on what I’m good at: helping my clients, creating amazing, helpful content, building relationships and growing my business.

Anything else, I either automate or hire a freelancer to do.  Chances are they’ll do it better anyway!

So if you can, hire your first freelancer or virtual assistant as soon as you can.  Don’t wait until you’re feeling overwhelmed, confused, exhausted and everything is backing up.

Stay ahead of the game!

Instead of spending time on repetitive tasks, automate it or create a process you can share and hire a VA to do it for you.

Instead of spending months learning SEO, hire a freelancer who already has those specialist skills.

Here are my top tips for knowing when you’re ready to hire your first freelancer

  1. You’re turning down work.

If you’re so busy that you're actually turning down work, then you need someone to take some of that work off your plate so you can focus on your clients

  2. Your clients, customers or suppliers can’t reach you.

If you’re having trouble keeping up with emails, returning calls, placing orders or scheduling appointments, it’s time to hire a VA!

  3. You need someone with specific skills.

Want to up your SEO game or have new headshots?  That’s the perfect time to hire someone to help you in your business.

  4. Your business isn’t growing.

It may seem counterintuitive, but if your business isn’t growing, it’s probably because you simply have too much on your plate and can’t put your full focus where you need it.

  5. You don’t like Mondays!

(Or any other day anymore!)  If you’re stuck doing administrative tasks, or things you hate doing, pretty soon, you’re going to start dreading working every day!  Remember the spark and excitement of your business when you first launched? I still feel that, every day! If you don’t, it’s probably because you’re too busy doing things you hate, instead of focusing on what you’re good at and you love doing.

  6. You’re launching a new product, service or online course.

If you can afford it, hire a great copywriter!  It really will make all the difference to your launch, the number of conversions you get and the sales you make.  Seriously, it’s all in the copy!

  7. You want to be the CEO of your business, not the Employee.

If you wanted to be the Employee, you’d go get a 9-5, right?  Being the CEO means working smarter, not working every hour possible!

  8. You don’t have time to spend with your loved ones.

Why did you start your business?  I bet it wasn’t so you could work more, restless and see your family and friends less was it?!  Remember, this is YOUR business, design it in a way that works FOR you.

  9. Your freelancer costs less per hour than you charge.

Let’s say you charge $200 per hour for your time with a client.  You’re unsure whether or not to hire a virtual assistant to help you with the day to day running if your business.  Your potential VA costs you $20 per hour. If you book a client in for an hour, you’ve made yourself a profit of $180.  Worth it? Absolutely! Any time you can get paid MORE than your freelancer costs, you’re winning!

Conclusion

Hiring your first freelancer or outsourcing a project to someone can seem scary!  But there are many occasions, opportunities and real reasons why hiring a freelancer is actually the better option.

For me, it has given me time back in my day, let me focus on doing what I love the most (helping my clients to succeed online and creating valuable content!) and it's one of the best things I ever did!

If you’re still unsure, just start speaking to a freelancer and see how you feel about it then.  Have a rough idea of what you want them to do and just have a chat! Ask for references or testimonials, see examples of their work and always keep a great line of communication open while you work together.

Finding the perfect VA or freelancer for your business will change your life - and your business!
